BMW R 90/6 WITH SUPERELASTIK SIDECAR

Since I ride every day, no matter what weather I decided I was getting too old to fall over in the snow and bought a sidecar as you may already have read on the MZ page ( which was my first sidecar )

Because the MZ was too slow to my taste ( and the impatient cardrivers behind me ) I started looking for something a little faster and with more torque to pull the sidecar.

I saw a very nice and well maintained BMW r 90/6 not too far from home and decided to take a look and testride.

Liked it and took it home ( 30/04/2010 )

Started by taking the rack and cases off the moment I got home

It's a former policebike, hence the longer and closed frontfender and the documentscompartment in the tank

I took the R 90S fairing off and put wider bars on it, the short bars would mean to little leverage on a hack

Put a forkbrace on it and put a metal plate on the brakepedal so I could reach it easier

A friend of a friend had a subframe for sale to bolt a SuperElastik straight to a BMW R

It took forever to get the outfit to fit right.....

....and it still wouldn't sit right.

Then I found out the lower rear ball was too high on the subframe, cut it off and welded it in the right position...

.....and voila, problem solved.

I was not content with the way the toprearmount looked, with that weird MZ construction so I changed that

Since I really liked the torsionbar on the MZ I bought another one on Ebay.de ( the original one went back on the MZ when I put the transporthack on that ) and cut and welded it to fit the BMW. My sister in law had those extensions made at her work ;-)

The threated holes with bolts were only for fittingpurposes, I welded the holes and the side of the extensions once everything was in place

It works really well, I've got some movies without and with the torsionbar on youtube.

Bought heavy duty sidecarshocks from Carell in Germany

and bought a secondhand soloseat which I had altered and refurbished by LoneWolf

Because of the toprearclamp for the sidecar on the BMWframe I had to put the soloseat further back a little so it had to be extended, which also meant moving the hinge and closingpin

New tire with loads of profile for sidecar use

That made it into this nice and classic looking hack

Pics from every possible angle except from the underside:

I bought some Grimeca 6 pot brakecallipers for future use, I'll have a leading link frontfork made soon.

Second pic is for testfitting purposes only of course

Then I saw this huge tank for sale, a fibreglass Heinrich lookalike, made in Germany. Couldn't resist buying it.

And although a a lot of people hate it ( including my wife :+ ) I like it so it stays on.

Because the toprearclamp was in the way of the tank it had to be moved a bit to the back and a little lower on the frame

I welded tabs on the bracket to accept the rod to the sidecar, which I also had to shorten ( 17-02-2012 )

Cut a hole in an old sidepanel I had lying around, perfect fit. I just had to transfer the shape and place of this hole onto the original sidepanel.

I will try to get hold of another clamp and brace the 2 clamps from one side of the frame to the other, over the battery.

On the rear the big tank would fit on the original rubbers so I had a bracket made which I fibreglassed into the tanktunnel.

On the front it fits nicely with the downtubes

Inside the tanktunnel I mounted the coils on top of the frame. Masterbrakecilinder could stay on top of the frame, tunnel in tank is big enough. I also changed the original frontbracket that came with the tank to fit this configuration ( it's originally for an earlier BMW, on the R 90/6 the extra toptube is in the way )

I love the looks of this

I photoshopped a pic of what it would look like with the right color ( yes yes, I know.... )
